March 2012 - storytelling & camp-fire

Sat March 3rd, 2-5pm. Woodland Stories & camp-fire at Sharpham, near Ashprington. This has become an annual event - last year it was described as 'a lovely, inspiring day-out – a day that was also educational in a subtle, affordable and effortless way. I couldn't really suggest any improvements. I thought the day was superbly well run – lots of fun and very safe in a sensible, unfussy way.' We will be cooking on a fire, hearing stories, making woodland animals & exploring as it gets dark. Usual stuff: wear wellies, wrap up warm, etc. £3 per dad, free under 5s, £1 over 6. No need to book.

‘’Ian thanks for a wonderful day at the apple pressing. This is for real... my three kids could not have had a better time.... this may sound like hyperbole but it is just what they all needed ... looking out for each others kids, friends, something positive to do and and freedom to choose what they got up to, making apple juice, playing tag, climbing trees, chatting, even just hanging with the parent in a calm and unhindered way. Honestly it was the best day.. They came away calm and fulfilled, they had fun, achieved something and felt like they had a real treat with the free juice.''

’’Apple juice day was great as always. Got to spend more time with my daughter this year, getting wet washing apples and throwing apples in the chopper. Both children got to do a lot more this year as they (and I) felt that they are more able and independent.’’

‘’As always a bright sunny afternoon amongst the trees in the apple orchard, another fine event, good to see a new generation of DD’s out there. My girls loved it as usual, more hands on this time, getting stuck into the mulch and bottling up which gave them more to do than just apple picking. Cleaning down at the end was what young P. liked the most (but a hosepipe and a field are the main ingredients for fun where she is concerned). Yet again a highlight of our autumn calendar.’’

‘’C. and L. had an absolutely fantastic time camping. He got so much confidence from looking after the BBQ, was talking about it for days afterwards. And Lily made lots of new friends, basically it was good just to chill out and be with the children without any real time restraints or things we had to do. And the apple juice thing is always a winner, they've drunk loads and taken some to school. My wife thinks DD is great, gets us out of her hair for a few hours, exhausts the children and they come back full of stories. I've tried to get her interested in the mums version but she's not interested.’’

‘’T (my 3 yo) and I came to the Apple Juice / Cider making day on Saturday - our first DDads day together - and I only have glowing things to say about it all! First off, T and I struggle to find interesting and engaging events to go to on our "Daddy & Daughter" days as most times, events aren't centred around the idea of interaction with other parents or even people! DDads sees things differently, it seems, and rightly so. T got to mingle with lots of children on Saturday, was happy to be involved with the various processes as she is a helpful child (most often), and was suitably exhausted by the time we got home. All the other Dads were obviously enjoying themselves as much as me and it was a pleasure to meet them. I especially liked the "standing around the broken machine asking lots of questions" moment - a Dad's only prerogative I think! I look forward to the next event and hope we can make it.’’
